    • David Coates, PGA Head Golf Professional

Dave Coates’s career has spanned more than twenty-five years and has taken him to many magnificent places, including those that could be described as “classics.” In those twenty-five years, Dave has had the unique opportunity to work at clubs with diverse styles including a truly mammoth operation at Baltusrol Golf Club, a fast-paced program at Essex County Country Club, and more traditional, family-focused atmospheres at St. David’s Golf Club, Centre Hills Country Club, and Williamsport Country Club.

Members and guests will see him as approachable, gentle, professional, and with a high level of integrity both on and off the course. Over the past twenty-five years, Dave has learned that the golf professional role is really the ambassador of the club. In Dave’s opinion, to serve as the golf ambassador, you need to be a great recruiter of talent, clearly and concisely communicate to the membership and fellow staff alike, be available and engaging to all member demographics, and set a standard of professional excellence in all facets of the golf operation.

In recent years, he has refined his leadership skills at Augusta National Golf Club in his role as Drive Skill Facilitator for the National Drive, Chip, and Putt Contest, along with the position of Putting Experience Coordinator at Berckman’s Place during The Masters Tournament. JJ Weaver, Head Professional at Augusta National and friend, uses the term “military precision” each year when he discusses the Drive, Chip, and Putt in order to deliver a great experience for the participants and the television entities. Dave has learned so much during his years at Augusta National and he quite often applied those learned experiences to my own golf operation.

“Core Values” such as honesty and integrity, continuous improvement, teamwork, attention to detail, unparalleled service, innovation and creativity, and respecting the traditions of the game will be your experience on a day to day at Williamsport C.C.

A great teaching program is the result of passionate, competent staff with exceptional programming centered on a holistic game improvement platform. This platform encompasses instruction, club-fitting, fitness, and even a little bit of game management through sports psychology.

In closing, he believes that with his hands-on approach to leadership, excellent discernment skills, a team-first mentality, and his commitment to fostering a warm, welcoming, and professional atmosphere, Dave and his team will exceed expectations from the moment you arrive at Williamsport C.C. to the time you leave.

      Swing Philosophy

As a club professional our responsibility is to help students enjoy the game of golf to the fullest. I am a firm believer that an effective teacher does not re-invent the wheel, but rather make that wheel run more efficiently.

During my career, I have researched some of the great players in the history of the game. Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Annika Sorenstam, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas. It has been especially rewarding to utilize the V1 Digital Coaching System and Flightscope launch monitor to analyze these players

It is tremendously fascinating to analyze the many different variables involved in teaching the game of golf. As your golf professional, it is my responsibility to analyze each student on an individual basis. There are several variables that are used to determine the proper manner of instructing with each student.

      - Athletic Ability
      - Body Type
      - Flexibility
      - Availability
      - Physical restrictions
      - The students’ individual goals
      - Dedication to practicing

First, the most important part of any lesson is to make the student feel comfortable and ascertain the best method of making improvements to their individual game. The advancement of video technology has become important teaching aid because most students are visual learners. Video analysis can assist in reinforcing the overall athletic motion of the golf swing. This technology has made it very easy to compare the students swing with a tour players seeing that has a similar body type and flexibility.

My commitment to continually educate myself on effective teaching methods that evolve through video analysis, through attending teaching seminars, by reading, watching YouTube videos and evaluating the latest trends of all of the top instructors.

      Swing Philosophy

As an instructor I pride myself on giving my absolute best effort in each lesson I give. There are a million different ways to swing the golf club and each person’s swing is different. I am not going to try and change everything in your swing to match someone else’s. What I do believe though is that there are fundamentals to the game that need to be mastered before you will see significant improvements. These fundamentals start at the very beginning of the swing and with various drills and video analysis we will be able to gather an array of data points to start working with. Starting players with a proper foundation of the golf swing will only set them up for future success in this game. When I teach any lesson, I want my students to understand what happens when a bad shot is hit. Having them understand what the problem is and how to fix it is key to improving their golf game. I believe golf is also just as much a mental game as it is physical. I will teach players how to think about golf and manage their expectations properly. At the end of the day though the goal is to have fun and enjoy this wonderful game.

      Swing Philosophy

My swing philosophy begins before a player ever strikes a golf ball; it all begins with understanding. It is key for players of all ages and skill levels to first understand what they are trying to accomplish before they can attempt to hit their first shots during a lesson or a practice session. A golfer must understand the relationships between their club face angle at impact, club path, and attack angle during the downswing. Laying a solid foundation for all players on how the relationship between those three factors play a vital role in the direction a ball starts, how it flies, and where it finishes. CLICK HERE to watch a short video on how to hit the ball straighter!

Once a student understands what they need to do to control the golf ball better, I will start by addressing their swing using the GPS (Grip, Posture, Stance) Method. The Golf Swing is a cause-and-effect movement, a large portion of a players swing errors can be traced back to how they address the ball, so by correcting the pre-swing deficiencies a player has, other things will fall into place. After correcting the pre-swing elements of the player’s swing, we will use the quantitative data points mentioned earlier to begin to diagnose the ball flight errors. When the ball flight errors are clearly identified and the root causes are narrowed down, the student and I will begin to associate “swing feelings” or “swing thoughts” with the desired data points we are trying to obtain.
